Presentation of Trophies to Alex Carpenter for winning the 4th of July Championship ALEX CARPENTER BLITZED THE COURSE WITH SCORES OF 64, 60, AND 59 over the Fourth of July week-end. Despite Joey Nichols spectacular eagle on 18, Carpenter sizzled with a 9 under par for the three day total of 183. Joey Nichols played excellent golf, chomping at the bit with a 6 under par 186 was that close to upsetting the champion from last year. We'll have more coverage on this tournament during this week. The Course was in excellent shape and it was challenging. Because the new 14 was changed from a par 4 to a par 3, par was lowered to 64.

Sam McCallister from Bryant, won the Super Senior Championship with a three day total of 209. Stan Lee from Heber Springs, winner of the Senior Championship, shot a 2 under par 190 for the three days, and shot 2 under par for the first and the last day of the tournament. Roger Clement came in second place with a 196. Todd Martin, creamed the competition by winning the Mid-Senior Championship with a one under par for the tournament with a 191. Nate Mosely was the winner of Match Play Championship. Danny Hill finished Second. Tune in the rest of this week with more highlights and shots from the tournament. On a sad note, Jay Lester had to withdraw from the Tournament when his father Bill Lester (1920-2010) died. Our condolences sympothy goes out to Jay and his family. Once again, this report would not have been possible without the contributions of Bob Baker, the Facilities Manager and golfer in residence at the famed War Memorial Golf Course.

Sam McCallister shot a cool 65 one over par in the second day to top his 70 on Saturday to take the lead in the Super Seniors going into Monday for the Super Seniors with Larry Patterson close behind with a 126 and Dan Young third with a 128. Absent from the field this year is perennial winner Ralph Williams who is recuperating from eye surgery. So Sam finally had some time for his day in the sun.

Roger Clement who shot par on Saturday and Sunday is tied for first with Stan Lee in the Senior Division. Lee Shot a wonderful 62 on Saturday, then tripped up with a 66 on Sunday.

Todd Martin is comfortably in the lead in the Mid-Senior Division after a great 62 on Saturday and then a one over par 65 on Sunday.
The Second Day of the War Memorial Fourth of July Tournament brought another humid day, but with wind. Rain cooled off the Course after blistering heat the day before. Past champions jockeyed for position for an exciting finish to the second round of the championship tournment which to say the least was anticlimactic for those watching only because there was one more day and anything can happen especially at War Memorial Golf Course. Joey Nichols, a tax lawyer with the Friday Law Firm from Little Rock, edged out Alex Carpenter, last years champion for the second day of the tournament. But Carpenter was just 1 stroke behind with a 124 for 36 holes. Tied for third were Neil Phelps and Lyle Middleton with a 36 hole total of 125. Not to be outdone, Lane Hulse and Michael Satterwhite tied for fourth place with a 36 hole total of 126.

Its going to be a dazzling finale tomorrow, even if it doesn't rain. The writer wishes to thank Bob Baker for providing todays scores in time for this publication.

Fourth of July Tournament Results

The Fourth of July Tournament started today on a mostly humid day with some rain. Players talked about the two new holes and felt they were challenging and rewarding. Some players commented about the sand on 13 right around the cup which caused the ball to stop dead. Following is a list of players together with their respective scores for the first day's play. Par on today's course was 64. (It was previously 65). Match players started playing first. Then Super Seniors, Mid-Seniors, Seniors, and then the Championship players. Throughout the day phone service at the club house was disconnected. Late afternoon phone service was restored. Players can call in tomorrow to get their tee times. The Clubhouse number is 501-663-0854. Bob Baker, facilities Manager at War Memorial Golf Course said that players will be paired according to their scores and that they would play between 730 and 12:50 with the lowest scores playing last.

In match play, Nate Mosely beat out Danny Hill with 1 up. Doug Webber beat down Allan Dishongh with 2 up. Cyril Enang beat out James Thomson with 1 up. Mark Griffin beat Kevin Saxton 4 and 3.

The lowest score in the Super Senior Championship Saturday was Larry Patterson's 66 (2 over par). There were 3 sub par rounds played in the Mid-Senior Championship Saturday played by John Siratt who shot a 61, Todd Martin who shot a 62 and Austin Franks who shot a 63. Stan Lee was the prevailing champion in the Senior Championship with their only sub-par round for a 62.

There were three sub-par rounds in the Championship Flight. Lyle Middleton lead the pack with a bistering 59, followed by Joey Nicholss blazing 60 and Neil Phelps and Mike Satterwhite with commendable 63s.

Players who played well and shot a 64 a par today recalled last year when they were rewarded with red for below par rounds, black for over par rounds, and blue for even par. This year, the first day at least, even par just got blackened for all their troubles.

The local TV stations were at the tournament no doubt to check out the two new holes 13 and 14. Some comments from the players throughout the day, "some people thought they were following a PGA tour." " I was so nervous (when the camera's were rolling, I couldn't hold the club. When I missed the shot, I asked the cameraman for instant replay hoping I could get another shot." Play continues tomorrow morning beginning at 7:30am with the Match Play Championship and Consolation Contest. Weather conditions tomorrow are hot, with a 20% chance of rain. Hopefully that chance will have been washed away by tonights rain, and it won't be so humid tomorrow.
