Tournament Time

We will be holding a MEMBER-GUEST on June 13th at War Memorial. The concept is that each member of our association will invite a NON-MEMBER to play and, with some incentives, that guest will want to become a member of our loyal band. More specific information will be out shortly! Save the date.

City Junior Tournament A Spectacular Success May 23, 2009 War Memorial Golf Course

A siren blast began play for the City Junior Tournament held Saturday at Little Rock's War Memorial Golf Course. 28 boys 14-17 years old; 8 boys 13 years old; 4 boys 12 years old; 16 girls dazzled the course with their long drives and accurate putting. It all began at 9:00A.M. and ended around 2:00P.M. It was finally dry unlike the previously scheduled two day event that had to be postponed due to rain. Some of you might remember that miserable wet day May 2, when we were rained out.

There was a huge turnout and the tournament only lasted for one day. There were a few people who didn't show mainly because of the rescheduling. Once again, the young golfers of today who played in this tournament showed that they will be the great golfers of tomorrow. I was a spotter for the 14th hole. Judge Alan Dushonge said he was going to do it but the last minute I was put there by Bob Baker who put Judge Allan Dishongh somewhere else I guess. Spotting this year was a little different than last year when I worked the 3rd hole with James Thomson. There at least I could see most of the balls as they came toward me. This year, because I was on 14, I relied on Alex Mortier, another volunteer and member of the Association. He made signals to me as if he were on a runway showing me which way to fly my plane except that he was pointing everything towards me where the drives were coming. Believe me when I say it was a pleasure to watch the balls as most of them came close to the green and or past it down by the road. Very few balls went to the right of the green, and at least 6-8 landed on the green. I found about 6 golf balls-and three of them were on on the other side of the road next to the zoo. None of the balls I found were from the tournament however. There was one golf ball inside the tree next to the green!

The young junior golfers ranging in age from 12 to 17 were impressive. Most of the golfers on the 14th hole where I was spotting hit their drive either on the fairway, close to the green, or on the green. A few hit their ball down the slope to the right of the fairway in the woods. . There were grilled hamburgers and fixings, chips, and soft drinks as well as water. There was one golfer who was in the first foursome who had to take his drive over again because I couldn't find his drive. His father thinks that it went down the water drain in the street in back of the green on fairpark. I found four balls, but none of them were his. Hunter Smith with a 63 won the overall Boys City Junior Championship after a three hole playoff to break a tie with two other junior golfers Garth Branstetter and Drew Comer. Summer Roachell with a 71 won first place in the Girls Division with a 71. Katie Webb was a close second with a 72.

Several weeks before golfers never got a chance to play. The play was called due to rain. I've included some pictures from in and around the clubhouse for that day.
