The Fourth of July Tournament started today on a mostly humid day with some rain. Players talked about the two new holes and felt they were challenging and rewarding. Some players commented about the sand on 13 right around the cup which caused the ball to stop dead. Following is a list of players together with their respective scores for the first day's play. Par on today's course was 64. (It was previously 65). Match players started playing first. Then Super Seniors, Mid-Seniors, Seniors, and then the Championship players. Throughout the day phone service at the club house was disconnected. Late afternoon phone service was restored. Players can call in tomorrow to get their tee times. The Clubhouse number is 501-663-0854. Bob Baker, facilities Manager at War Memorial Golf Course said that players will be paired according to their scores and that they would play between 730 and 12:50 with the lowest scores playing last.
In match play, Nate Mosely beat out Danny Hill with 1 up. Doug Webber beat down Allan Dishongh with 2 up. Cyril Enang beat out James Thomson with 1 up. Mark Griffin beat Kevin Saxton 4 and 3.
The lowest score in the Super Senior Championship Saturday was Larry Patterson's 66 (2 over par). There were 3 sub par rounds played in the Mid-Senior Championship Saturday played by John Siratt who shot a 61, Todd Martin who shot a 62 and Austin Franks who shot a 63. Stan Lee was the prevailing champion in the Senior Championship with their only sub-par round for a 62.
There were three sub-par rounds in the Championship Flight. Lyle Middleton lead the pack with a bistering 59, followed by Joey Nicholss blazing 60 and Neil Phelps and Mike Satterwhite with commendable 63s.
Players who played well and shot a 64 a par today recalled last year when they were rewarded with red for below par rounds, black for over par rounds, and blue for even par. This year, the first day at least, even par just got blackened for all their troubles.
The local TV stations were at the tournament no doubt to check out the two new holes 13 and 14. Some comments from the players throughout the day, "some people thought they were following a PGA tour." " I was so nervous (when the camera's were rolling, I couldn't hold the club. When I missed the shot, I asked the cameraman for instant replay hoping I could get another shot." Play continues tomorrow morning beginning at 7:30am with the Match Play Championship and Consolation Contest. Weather conditions tomorrow are hot, with a 20% chance of rain. Hopefully that chance will have been washed away by tonights rain, and it won't be so humid tomorrow.
