War Memorial Golf Association Club Championship October 3- 4, 2009
Ralph Williams wins the Senior Division Club Championship at Historic War Memorial Golf Course with a 69 on Saturday and a 69 on Sunday. Nate Mosley wins the Open Division with a 75 on Saturday and a 69 on Sunday. Ralph Williams reported a hole in one on Number 9 on Sunday October 4, 2009 by Morgan "Bucky" Magness to Bobby Baker, the Facilities Director at Historic War Memorial Golf Course. His report went something like this.....Hi Bobby, I know the Ar Dem Gaz runs a column, on the Sports Page, each Thursday, featuring holes in one. We had a doozy today. Playing in the War Memorial ChampionshipOn the 9th hole, Morgan "Bucky" Magness, hit a knocked-down six iron, into a rain storm with gale force winds. The shot never got more than head-high, hit the green, took one bounce, struck the flagstick, bounced about three feet to the side and, like a professionally cued pool shot, spun back into the hole. Almost unbelieveable. In sixty years of golf, I have never seen a ball with such incredible spin. Magness proceeded to chip in for birdie on hole #10 and carded a respectable 74 to finish second in the Senior Division. Witnesses: James Thomson, Colin Osment, Ralph Williams.

Ralph Williams, Tournament Chair & Prize Money & James Thomson our PresidentThere wasn’t a cloud in the sky. The air was cool, but pleasant. It was a gorgeous day to play golf Saturday October 3, 2009. Three foursomes played Saturday. A cold front moved in early Sunday morning right about an hour before play started. Only two foursomes played Sunday, a day that will live on in the annals of the Historic War Memorial Golf Course Championship Tournaments. There was going to be a steady pelting of rain throughout the day, just enough to make it a miserable day to play, and a challenging day for the Club Championship. Ironically, almost everyone who played Sunday improved or equaled their scores they made on Saturday. Dick Cochran passed out garbage bags to use as club covers for those players who needed them. Colin Osment showed perseverance and stamina playing without a golf hat. James Thomson sported a new panama hat on Saturday which he didn’t dare wear on Sunday. Nate Mosley went through three shirts. Those who didn’t have anything to prove dropped out Sunday-Mark Ross, John McCarty, Isaac Thomson, and Larry Smith. I ‘m still trying to figure out why Jay Lester played-he couldn’t compete in the tournament because he had a conflict I believe on the Hot Springs date-yet he shot a 66 on Saturday I believe, and a 61 on Sunday. Nate Mosley shot a 73 on Saturday and a 69 on Sunday. What was amazing was that the weather was not the kind of weather one would want to play golf in especially in a tournament. It was windy, cold, raining and in general miserable. The greens were bursting with water. The fairways were soaked. I’m sure glad I wasn’t playing. Everyone who played Sunday was glad it was over, but no one will ever forget it. –by Mark Ross
